Background of the study
This study examines the impact of collaborative translation efforts on the revitalization of the Yoruba language in Ibadan. In the context of language endangerment and cultural erosion, collaborative translation projects have emerged as a promising strategy to preserve and promote indigenous languages (Adebayo, 2023). In Ibadan, community-driven translation initiatives bring together professional translators, academics, and local storytellers to render classic texts, oral traditions, and contemporary works into Yoruba. Such collaborations not only enhance translation quality through the pooling of expertise but also foster community engagement and cultural pride. The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining case studies of collaborative projects, surveys of community members, and interviews with translation teams. It explores how these efforts contribute to language revitalization by improving accessibility to Yoruba literature and reinforcing cultural identity among younger generations. The findings are expected to provide insights into best practices and inform policies that support collaborative translation as a tool for language preservation (Adebayo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite various collaborative translation projects, challenges persist in fully revitalizing the Yoruba language in Ibadan. Issues such as inconsistent translation quality, limited funding, and coordination difficulties among collaborators have impeded the effectiveness of these initiatives (Adebayo, 2023). Furthermore, there is insufficient empirical data on how collaborative efforts impact language usage and cultural engagement in the community. These gaps in implementation and evaluation hinder the ability to scale up successful projects and integrate them into broader language revitalization strategies. This study seeks to assess the impact of collaborative translation efforts and identify factors that can be improved to enhance the overall revitalization of Yoruba.
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate the impact of collaborative translation projects on Yoruba language revitalization.
To identify challenges faced by collaborative translation teams.
To propose recommendations for enhancing collaborative efforts.
Research questions:
How do collaborative translation efforts affect Yoruba language use?
What challenges impede these collaborative projects?
How can collaborative translation be optimized for language revitalization?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the potential of collaborative translation to drive Yoruba language revitalization in Ibadan. The findings will benefit language planners, cultural organizations, and policymakers by providing actionable recommendations to support and expand community translation projects (Adebayo, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to collaborative translation initiatives in Ibadan, focusing on their impact on Yoruba language revitalization through selected case studies and stakeholder interviews.
Definitions of terms:
Collaborative translation: Joint translation efforts by multiple experts.
Language revitalization: Efforts to restore and promote declining languages.
